An introduction to Dr. Shari Bass, her approach to children’s healthcare, and the resources available to Dallas families.
I recently had the opportunity to visit Dr. Shari’s Pediatrics in Dallas and meet the physician behind the practice, Dr. Shari Bass, MD.
As the founder of Bright Pathways ABA, I regularly visit pediatricians and other healthcare professionals across North Texas. It’s one of my favorite parts of building our organization. Beyond introducing our autism therapy services, these visits give me the opportunity to discover local healthcare providers and learn about the resources available to families in our community.
Dr. Shari immediately struck me as someone with a bubbly, energetic, and welcoming personality. I also found it interesting that, as the founder of her own independent pediatric practice, she seemed to remain personally involved in overseeing the business and administrative side of running her office.
Having started my own healthcare organization, I can certainly appreciate the amount of work that goes into building and managing a practice while maintaining a focus on the families it serves.
During our meeting, I had the opportunity to introduce Bright Pathways ABA, explain a little about our approach to therapy, and share information about additional autism evaluation resources that might be helpful to families she sees.
Meeting Dr. Shari also sparked my interest in learning more about her professional background and the practice she has built. Her experience as a pediatrician, combined with her commitment to making healthcare more accessible in the Dallas community, makes her practice an interesting resource for local families.
Here’s a closer look at Dr. Shari and the services her office provides.
Meet Dr. Shari Bass: An Experienced Pediatrician Who Built Her Own Practice
Dr. Shari Bass is a board-certified pediatrician and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics who has practiced pediatrics since completing her residency in 2008.
She earned her medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 2005 and completed her pediatric residency at Wayne State University/Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit in 2008.
Originally from Detroit, Dr. Shari spent approximately ten years practicing in the Detroit metropolitan area before relocating to North Texas.
After moving to Texas, she also worked at Tyler Family Circle of Care, a federally funded healthcare clinic in Tyler.
In January 2021, she opened Dr. Shari’s Pediatrics, establishing her own independent pediatric practice in Dallas.
Her professional interests span a broad range of children’s healthcare needs. In addition to routine well-child visits, she has expressed particular interest in treating conditions such as asthma and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
One aspect of her background that I find particularly interesting is her experience working in different healthcare environments before establishing her own practice.
Moving from established healthcare organizations to running an independent clinic is a significant undertaking. It means taking responsibility not only for clinical care but also for the many operational details involved in keeping a medical practice running.
What Services Does Dr. Shari’s Pediatrics Offer?
Located on Gaston Avenue in Dallas, Dr. Shari’s Pediatrics describes itself as a full-service pediatric primary care clinic.
For parents, this means the practice offers care for many of the common health needs that arise throughout childhood, from routine checkups to illnesses and developmental concerns.
According to the practice’s website, its services include:
- Well-child visits: Routine checkups to monitor a child’s health, growth, and development.
- Sick visits: Medical appointments for children experiencing illnesses or other health concerns.
- Developmental monitoring: Reviewing children’s progress and discussing age-appropriate developmental expectations during well-child appointments.
- Asthma and ADHD care: Two areas Dr. Shari identifies among her clinical interests.
- Childhood vaccinations: The practice offers many routine pediatric vaccines, subject to availability, and participates in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program.
- Specialist referrals: Connecting families with additional healthcare professionals when a child’s needs require further evaluation or specialized treatment.
- Telemedicine appointments: Virtual visits for appropriate medical concerns, providing an additional option for families who cannot easily attend an in-person appointment.
The office also reports that laboratory services are available in the same building, potentially making certain aspects of care more convenient for families.
Of course, not every concern can be addressed through a routine pediatric visit. Some children may need specialized assessments or treatment from other professionals.
That’s one reason establishing care with a pediatrician is so important: pediatricians often help families recognize when additional support may be beneficial and guide them toward the appropriate next steps.
An Independent Practice With a Focus on Healthcare Accessibility
One detail that stood out to me while researching Dr. Shari’s Pediatrics was the practice’s stated commitment to improving healthcare access.
According to its website, the clinic was intentionally established within approximately five minutes of South Dallas, with the goal of helping families in communities where access to convenient medical care can be limited.
The practice specifically discusses the importance of addressing healthcare access challenges and making quality pediatric care more readily available to local families.
That mission is reflected in several practical features of the office.
For example, Dr. Shari’s Pediatrics notes that its location is accessible through the DART public transportation system.
The practice also offers telemedicine appointments for certain healthcare needs and advertises sliding-scale services for underinsured patients.
These may seem like relatively small details, but they can make a meaningful difference for parents balancing work schedules, transportation challenges, insurance limitations, and the everyday responsibilities of raising children.
I also appreciate the fact that Dr. Shari operates an independently owned practice.
Independent pediatric clinics give families another option alongside larger healthcare systems and medical groups. They also allow physicians to take direct responsibility for how their practices are organized and operated.
That doesn’t necessarily make one model better than another, but having a variety of healthcare options is valuable for families.
What Are Parents Saying About Dr. Shari?
While my own interaction with Dr. Shari was positive, I always like to see what families who have actually received care from a clinician have to say. And what I saw reinforced what I personally felt.
On Zocdoc, Dr. Shari has an overall rating of 4.73 out of 5 stars from 159 patient reviews.
Many parents describe her as kind, attentive, patient, and willing to listen to their concerns. Several also mention positive experiences with the office staff and the way Dr. Shari interacts with their children.
One recurring theme in the reviews is parents appreciating that their children feel comfortable during appointments.
That’s an important consideration when choosing a pediatrician, especially for younger children or those who may feel anxious about medical visits.
Naturally, online reviews reflect individual experiences, and no practice will be the perfect fit for every family. Still, the positive feedback about her personality and communication style was consistent with the warm, energetic impression I had when meeting her.
The Pediatrician’s Role in Identifying Developmental Concerns
As someone who works closely with families of children with autism, I’m particularly interested in the role pediatricians play in recognizing developmental differences and helping parents understand their options.
Pediatricians are often among the first professionals parents approach when they notice something concerning about their child’s development.
During routine checkups, pediatricians monitor more than physical growth. They also discuss communication, social interaction, behavior, motor skills, and other developmental milestones.
Parents may raise concerns about a child who is not speaking as expected, has difficulty interacting with peers, displays repetitive behaviors, or struggles with certain everyday activities.
These signs do not automatically indicate autism, and there can be many different explanations for developmental differences.
However, they can be reasons to explore whether additional screening or a more comprehensive evaluation is appropriate.
A pediatrician can help families understand the next steps and provide referrals when specialized assessment is needed.
Finding Autism Evaluation Resources in North Texas
One challenge I regularly hear about from families is finding an appropriate provider to complete a comprehensive autism evaluation.
A developmental screening at a pediatrician’s office is not the same as a comprehensive diagnostic assessment.
When a child needs a formal autism evaluation, families may be referred to a qualified psychologist, developmental-behavioral pediatrician, or another appropriately trained diagnostic professional.
During my visit with Dr. Shari, I had the opportunity to share information about several local providers offering autism evaluations, including Lifespan Psychological Services.
I previously highlighted some of these resources in my article, Inside North Dallas’ Rapidly Evolving Pediatric Ecosystem.
The goal of sharing these resources is simple: the more options pediatricians and families are aware of, the easier it may be to identify an appropriate evaluation provider based on insurance coverage, location, and appointment availability.
For parents concerned about their child’s development, speaking with their pediatrician is an excellent starting point.
My Visit: Introducing Bright Pathways ABA and Our Approach to Therapy
During my visit I had the opportunity to touch on during my visit was the work we’re doing at Bright Pathways ABA.
For families unfamiliar with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), it is a therapeutic approach that uses principles of learning and behavior to help children develop meaningful skills.
ABA therapy may address areas such as communication, social interaction, independence, daily living skills, and behaviors that interfere with learning or everyday functioning.
At Bright Pathways, we primarily provide individualized, one-on-one therapy in children’s homes and other appropriate natural environments throughout Dallas and the broader Texas communities.
Our goal is to help children build skills that can make a meaningful difference in their everyday lives.
One aspect of our approach that I mentioned to Dr. Shari is that we don’t impose a blanket age restriction on the children we consider for services.
While many of the children we currently serve are between approximately two and ten years old, we also consider older children and teenagers when we have the clinical resources and staffing necessary to support them appropriately.
Rather than making decisions solely based on a child’s age, we consider their individual needs and whether our team is equipped to provide clinically appropriate care.
We also place significant importance on supporting our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), the clinicians responsible for overseeing each child’s therapy.
Our BCBAs are not required to meet a fixed minimum number of billable hours, as is common in many other ABA therapy organizations. Instead, they have flexibility in determining their workloads and which cases they can appropriately support.
We believe that giving clinicians flexibility and respecting their professional judgment can help create a more sustainable working environment and support thoughtful, individualized care.
Dr. Shari also mentioned Neuropath ABA Services, another provider with a family-centered approach. It was interesting to hear about another organization working in this space, particularly given the importance we place on individualized care and supporting the professionals who deliver it.
I appreciated the opportunity to introduce these aspects of Bright Pathways and share resources that could be helpful to families seeking developmental evaluations or therapy.
ABA Therapy Availability for Dallas Families
For families exploring ABA therapy, one of the biggest concerns is often how long it will take to get started.
At Bright Pathways ABA, we currently have no waitlists for families with BCBS commercial, Aetna, and UnitedHealthcare/Optum/UMR insurance.
We work particularly closely with Blue Cross Blue Shield, which often allows us to move through the process and get families started fastest with BCBS commercial insurance.
We also work with Texas Medicaid and other insurance plans, although families with Medicaid should generally expect a longer wait because of the more time-consuming insurance approval and staffing process.
Our team assists families with benefits verification, assessments, authorizations, and coordinating their therapy team.
Parents interested in learning more can visit Bright Pathways ABA.
Insurance and Accessibility at Dr. Shari’s Pediatrics
For families considering Dr. Shari’s Pediatrics, insurance coverage is another important factor.
The practice’s published insurance information includes major commercial carriers such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Humana.
It also lists various Medicaid and CHIP-related plans, including Superior HealthPlan, Molina, and Texas Children’s Health Plan.
Because insurance participation can vary by plan and network, families should contact the office to confirm whether their specific coverage is accepted.
The practice also advertises sliding-scale services for underinsured families, which may be worth asking about if affordability is a concern.
